The Science of Sound

Acoustics is the science that investigates the production, control, transmission, reception, and effects of sound. The range of topics under study is huge, from the design of concert halls to the echolocation of prey by bats, from road traffic noise to cochlear implants. Often, a multi-discipline approach is necessary. Investigators with a variety of backgrounds can be involved, from the life sciences, from the physical sciences, and more. People who do acoustics are known as acousticians.
